Flu Virus What Are Alternate Names for the Flu Virus?

Flu; Influenza A; Influenza B, Swine Flu, H1N1, Avian Flu, Bird Flu

What is The Flu Virus Definition

The flu is a contagious infection of the nose, throat, and lungs caused by the influenza virus.

What Are the Symptoms of the Flu?

Flu symptoms can vary, but these are the main symptoms to be aware of since the flu usually starts abruptly with a fever between 102°F - 106°F. (Adults typically have lower fevers than children.) Other common symptoms include a flushed face, body aches, chills, headache, nausea and lack of energy. Some people have dizziness or vomiting. The fever usually lasts for a day or two, but can last as long as 5 days.

omewhere between day 2 and day 4 of the illness, the "whole body" symptoms begin to subside, and respiratory symptoms begin to increase.

The most common respiratory flu symptom is usually a dry, hacking cough. Most people also develop a sore throat and headache. Nasal discharge (runny nose) and sneezing are also common symptoms of the flu virus.

Most of these symptoms are usually gone within 4 - 7 days, but the cough and tiredness may continue for weeks.

Now, let's get down to one of the most important elements of dealing with the flu virus -- prevention or stopping the spread of the Flu Virus.

How to protect yourself and your family against the Flu Virus.

This is simple and we can all do this and slow down the spread of the flu virus to a crawl.

What You Can Do Immediately

Wash your damn hands, yes, I said it because it needs to be said. When you go out in public, it is important to carry hand sanitizer, hand wipes and, whenever possible, wash your hands and your children's hands too.

Basic Flu Virus Prevention

I'm tired of folks.....

Call it whatever you like -- Swine Flu, Influenza A or H1N1 -- the bottom line is this is one serious bug and we need to learn how to protect ourselves.

As with any virus, there are many lines of defense to help keep you safe, but let's start with the basics:

Step 1. Wash your damn hands
Step 2. Cover you damn mouth

Cover Your Mouth

These two simple practices have been (or should have been) drilled into most of us ever since we were small, but as I mentioned above, I'm tired of watching folks just hacking all out into shared public spaces, or sneezing all over their hands or blowing their noses without washing their hands, and then just expecting me to shake their hand or let them touch me. You've got to constantly keep an eye out and an ear tuned to see what particular brand of nastiness is being practiced whenever you go out in public, and don't be afraid to let people know, firmly, that they need to cover their mouths when they cough, sneeze or yawn, and they need to wash their hands if they're going to touch you, or touch something going into you, like your food, for instance.

Swine flu can be transmitted via the air or through human contact, so now it's time to hit the flu virus with both barrels. Use a hand sanitizer, but not just any sanitizer -- make sure it's an antibacterial that kills swine flu germs on contact. There are loads of products on the market that can get rid of bacteria on your hands, but I use ________ because I want to protect against swine flu, MRSA, Staff, Strep and many other "superbugs".

Be proactive -- it's time you started verbalizing your concerns to all those who are offering personal services to you such as doctors, nurses, masseuses, salon personnel, dentists, and anyone else you have close contact with who regularly is in contact with the public. You owe it to yourself and your health to always ask your practitioners to wash their hands prior to administering any direct services to you. If they get offended -- no worries, better that they're offended and you come out of the experience healthy then the ugly alternative: you contract Swine Flu, Influenza A, or whatever super bug they happen to have been harboring on their hands when they handled you.
